Well all the guide books, blogs, reviews and word of mouth echo the same thing really — ‘when in Mauritius, Flic en Flac is the beach of choice’, it’s on the west coast and rated as one of the best beaches in Mauritius and a must on your list of places to go whilst on the island.
The more a place is ‘hyped up’ the more prepared I am for disappointment; Flic en Flac didn’t disappoint me though, it surprised me — it was so much more than just a pretty beach.
Flic en Flac was the first beach I visited away from my hotel and it wasn’t what I was expecting.
Firstly, I was struck by the wide expanse of fir trees lining the beach front — I’d never seen a beach like this before! The fir trees have been imported into Mauritius apparently, and add a beautiful ‘forest by the beach’ vibe to a lot of the island’s beach scenes.
It’s a family thing.
I was also surprised at how busy it was on the beach (a Sunday afternoon), it seemed like every mauritian family on the island was down at Flic en Flac having some impressive get togethers, along with us tourists. I later learned that it was also the school summer holidays for children in Mauritius at the time.
To be honest it felt like you could probably have played ‘spot the tourist’ on this beach lol — got to love that!
There were tents pitched everywhere you looked, multiple generations of family members sitting together, tucking into food they’d prepared and brought along with them. There was drumming, singing, guitars playing and everyone was enjoying the sunshine and lively atmosphere.
It was busy, colourful and the energy was happy.
Flic en Flac beach is very very long, it didn’t seem to end in either direction.

I’d certainly reccommend spending at least one afternoon at Flic en Flac even if you’re not much of a beach person, just nip down and absorb the atmosphere for a while, I suspect weekends are usually the busiest.
